Samantha & Sohil engagement session at Brooklyn Bridge and Dumbo
In my 5 years and half as a photographer, I’ve been extremely lucky to get to work with all kinds of amazing human beings. As you’d expect, every couple is different from the next. Some are all about the PDA, some are all about keeping it sweet and romantic, and some people… well, some people are just downright hysterical!
Meet Samantha and Sohil, two of the funniest people I’ve worked with in a really long time. The session took place at Brooklyn in New York City, which was a great backdrop for our 1.5 hours together.
The entire time these two were cracking jokes and playing with each other, being funny, and I was there to catch it all on camera. I thought it was particularly funny when Sohil grabbed Samantha by surprised and spun her around. Ha!
Here’s a few highlights of this FUN day. Be ready to get emotional with their unique love story!
HOW THEY MET?
“ Sohil and I met in law school in Phoenix, Arizona. We specifically met in our second semester of our first year of law school. The class we met in was in our writing class; we got to pick the subject for that class and we both chose Legal Writing for Domestic Violence Cases. We sat across the room from each other and Sohil was one of five guys in the class; two of the guys were married and the other three, including Sohil, were single. I was very focused on my studies so I did not notice too much when Sohil would hang around the water cooler near my other classes and he would just “bump” into me and want to chat about this and that. These little interactions led to us studying for finals together and him bringing me sweets like a doughnut with a Peep on it … him not knowing that I was a pescatarian that did not eat gelatin. “
THEIR FIRST DATE
“ We have two first dates; one is our unofficial first date and the other is our official date. For our unofficial first date, Sohil invited me over to his apartment for a dinner party he was hosting with his friends. He forgot that I was a pescatarian again and remembered only a few hours before I was supposed to arrive at his apartment. He was planning on making chicken tikka masala and did not have any potatoes so he had to run to the store and buy some. It was a pretty great “date” because we got a little bit of alone time together and bond. I did end up ruining one of the shows he was watching because I pointed out that the colour magenta was in every scene in “Rules of Engagement.” He was not happy about this observation on my part, but he knew what he was getting into … I am a lawyer after all. I got to meet his friends and hangout and then afterward, Sohil and I went for ice cream! This unofficial first date was the best, especially food-wise since Sohil did not know that I love potatoes and ice cream!”
WHEN THEY KNEW THEY HAD FOUND THE ONE
It was never just one aspect of our relationship that made me feel Samantha was the one. We listened, learned and grew together as a couple and that desire to improve and understand one and other is why I know she is and will always be the ONE!
THE PROPOSAL
It was all a dream … It was Valentine’s Day and we do not make a big deal about this holiday, aside from getting each other a card and the treating it like any other day. This Valentine’s Day Sohil stated that his boss was supposed to go to The Met Cloisters with his wife, but had to make a last minute trip out of town so he asked Sohil if we would like the tickets. We both thought it would be fun since we have not gone yet and it was a new adventure for us. We got dressed up (and very bundled up with lots of layers as it was 25 degrees out) and headed out for our adventure. Since we lived in New York City, carrying a backpack with snacks, water, etc. is a necessity. When we got to the museum Sohil had to check his backpack and our coats and he was not happy about it; I did not know why he was so upset about it, but I did not think too much on it. After checking our things in with the museum we went on a tour. It was such a great museum and so much history! After our tour and visiting the museum we were ready to head back out and toward the subway, but Sohil had other plans. He stated he wanted to walk around the outside of the museum, especially toward the front of the museum since it was overlooking the Hudson River. We stopped on the pathway and Sohil told me he wanted to exchange our Valentine’s Day cards. I told him it was freezing and I did not bring my card for him, we could just exchange our cards at home. He was beyond insistent that he wanted to do it right then and there so I said, “Fine, give me the card.” It was not a card, but actually a book he created of all the reasons why he loves me and other little things we have shared together. It was the sweetest and absolute perfect thing! Even to this point, I had no idea he was planning on proposing. I got to the third to last page of the book and started feeling, “This is the moment, he is proposing … OH MY GOSH!” And then I turned the page and it was not a proposal so I was closing the book and Sohil stated, “There is another page.” I was confused because the second to last page looked like the end. So I turned the page and there it was, he asked me to marry him on the page and in front of me, he was kneeling on one knee with the most beautiful ring! The rest is history!
ONE THING THEY LOVE ABOUT EACH OTHER
Sam: This question is always so hard to answer because there is not just one thing that I love about Sohil; everything extends from one thing to another thing. However, if I really had to choose just one thing I love the most about Sohil it would be his unwavering love for me and us; he has this ability to always make me want to be a better person because of his encouragement of me, always acknowledging my strengths, accepting my faults and loving me for the person I am.
Sohil: For me to say there is just a single thing that I love most about Samantha would be lying to myself. If I absolutely had to name the one thing that has remained a constant, it would be her fait in me and us. Through the thick and thin, there was never a time I felt she lost her faith in us getting through it and being stronger than before. Her faith in me and seeing me for who I am, and who I could be, especially when I don’t see that, continues to be the driving force behind me wanting to be a better person than I was yesterday.
THE UPCOMING WEDDING
Sam: “ I am most excited to bring our families together and to share this with all of them! Our families mean so much to us and we could not think of celebrating our love and bringing our two souls together without our families there by our side, supporting us and showering us with all of the positive thoughts and love! It also is pretty great that we are able to bring both of our religions and cultures together in one day to celebrate all that we are with everyone. It does not hurt either that we get to have two different ceremonies, one Catholic and one Indian, and have two different wardrobe changes!! “
Sohil: “ The FOOD!!! We wanted to make sure it will be a night we both never forget and want that for all our guests. Sweet, salty, spicy… we have it all covered and cant wait to try all the different dishes and end the night with a dessert bar! “
They are getting married at The Grove in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. They choose this location for so many reasons, but mostly because the venue is gorgeous inside and outside and the fact that there is only one wedding being held at a time.
FAVORITE PART OF THE SESSION
We loved the aspect of being able to have our engagement in the city that brought us together once more and where we got engaged. NYC was truly an amazing time and I will never forget it and I think we wanted to have these pictures to remember forever!
Wishing these two lots of luck! But really, with a relationship as lighthearted and fun as this one, I don’t think they’ll need any luck!
